Den Dwellers(2014), a joint venture by Matthew Goodsmith and Yi Xin Yan - an artist couple living and working together-consists of a cubic shelter structure that is occupied by biomorphous papier mache figures by Yi Xin Yan. The work comments both on problematic housing situations caused by gentrification and how space is influenced by being inhabited. The structure created by Matthew Goodsmith is built from debris- found objects - that the artist collected throughout the last six months of his residency. In a performative approach he sorted out and rearranged the gathered material over and over again in order to get a sense of its materiality and detach the meaning implied by its original function modifying them for their specific purpose as an art object. After a phase of probing and examination the artist commenced in the actual construction phase, where he initially built small shelter units that were immediately dismantled again. In the current cubic structure Yi Xin Yan’s applied papier mache sculptures, organic figures o f varying sizes, partly unadorned blobs hanging from beams and others supplied with little plastic legs resembling human silhouette without individualising them. Through the strict Juxtaposition of linear cubes with rounded shapes a further aesthetic tension is created, in which the two individual works negotiate one space creating a cross-fertilisation of work.
